How much does labour hurt?
One of the biggest fears about labour is pain—how much of it, how long it lasts, and whether it can be managed. But here’s something that might surprise you: much of labour isn’t actually spent in pain at all. In an average eight-hour labour, contractions only take up around 23% of the total time, and the most intense moments make up just 7.7%—that’s only about 37 minutes of peak intensity.
With this in mind, preparing for labour isn’t about bracing for hours of pain, but rather learning how to ride the waves and make the most of the calm moments. Hypnobirthing, rebozo techniques, massage, acupressure, and aromatherapy are just some of the tools that can help. And for continuous, in-the-moment support, a doula can be an invaluable presence.
Understanding how your body works and what can help you feel more in control is a game-changer. The more informed and prepared you are, the more confident you’ll feel going into birth. So, how much of your labour will be pain-free? More than you might think.
Why ONE BORN EVERY MINUTE is not your friend!
Doula support is about you—your choices, your journey, your birth. With personalised care, practical tools, and unwavering support, I’ll help you prepare for birth with confidence and calm, ensuring your experience is truly your own.
Why it's ok to Ruffle your midwife's Feathers
It is something that comes up time and time again when talking to parents about making choices about their maternity care: It goes something like this...
Mum: I know that I could have done, but I didn't email the Head of Midwifery asking her to grant permission for me to use the pool for my VBAC because I didn't want to be 'that' person, I didn't want to ruffle any feathers ahead of my birth and then be treated differently because of it.

Are Maternity Measurements Serving You? Finding Balance in Birth Choices
When numbers and charts enter the realm of maternity care, they can shape your pregnancy and birth experience far more than you might expect. We are not machines, and treating our bodies as such—through constant measurements—doesn’t always make sense. Though metrics like growth scans, bump measurements, and CTG readings are offered to track progress, it’s essential to consider how much they truly serve you. After all, pregnancy is a deeply personal journey that extends beyond what can be quantified on a chart.
